Rafael Benitez will risk more Anfield aggro by demanding £50million for big-name transfers.

With peace just settled after a year of bitter infighting at the club, Liverpool boss Benitez will gamble it all by asking for a new fortune.

He wants to buy Spain superstar David Villa, Brazilian Daniel Alves and Valencia's Spanish winger David Silva - as well as Gareth Barry from Aston Villa. It could spark another civil war on Merseyside and is a huge call by Benitez, who almost lost his job last year when he spoke out against the transfer restrictions imposed on him by the club's American owners.

The row spread throughout Anfield, leaving the manager's ally Tom Hicks and George Gillett at each other's throats and chief executive Rick Parry fearing for his position.

But with Gillett brokering a peace deal with Hicks - and accepting that the pair must invest in the future - Benitez feels he can now flex his managerial muscle to demand more signings.

The Spaniard will try to offset some of the required cash with sales but it is a risky strategy, because if it threatens the uneasy alliance between Hicks and Gillett then it could undermine the whole future of the club.

Benitez is convinced he must act - or Liverpool will never challenge Manchester United and Chelsea for the title.

He has made two signings so far, the free-transfer capture of Swiss right-back Philipp Degen and £7million Italian defender Andrea Dossena from Udinese.

But it is the next three stars he reckons will shape the future of Liverpool at a cost of around £50m.

He has virtually done a deal to bring Barry to Anfield for around £15m, but wants to spend even more on wide players.

Top target on the left is Silva, who has starred in Spain's run to the Euro 2008 semi-final. But he will not come cheap with Valencia demanding £20m.

Benitez is also interested in Villa, but until now assumed he simply would not have the funds to compete with Real Madrid and Barcelona.

The other Valencia star has already shown his ability to form a devastating partnership with Fernando Torres.

Villa and Silva together would cost at least £35m.

Benitez will attempt to appease the Americans by selling Xabi Alonso to Juventus for £15m, along with the £4m sale of John Arne Riise to Roma, plus a raft of other unwanted players.
